St Barbara is one of the many saints who were lost to the calendar during 1969. Although legend has it that she was born in Asia Minor in about 300AD, there is no actual reference to her until several centuries later. Belief was that, after long and dreadful persecution for her Christian faith, a young Barbara was not only condemned to death but was condemned to be beheaded by her father. After he carried out the sentence on his daughter, Barbara's father attempted to flee from his homeland but was "struck dead by lightning in divine retribution" (Wiki). It is from this sudden end to a life, that St Barbara has become the devotional protector artillery gunners, miners and tunnellers and anyone who works at risk of sudden and violent death. On Friday, 4 April 2008, Father Dave was invited to bless the men who are constructing the tunnel under the Brisbane River, to bless the work that they are doing for our city's future and to invoke the protection of St Barbara so that they return to their families in safety. The dedication prayers were held at the Gibbon Street site of the tunnel works. Equipped with stole, prayer book, hard hat and safety vest and, of course, a statue of St Barbara, Father Dave prayed for God's protection on the people of the worksite.
